Event Details

Troubleshooting Concrete Construction (Steve Waalkes, MCA) Steve will cover the basics of troubleshooting issues with concrete construction, detailing the investigation and methodology for determining the causes for uncontrolled concrete concerns such as pop-outs, scaling, and cracking. He will also discuss potential mitigation strategies to fix and prevent these common issues on your projects.

Current Status of the New Soo Locks (Brian Lucarellie, USACE) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is in the midst of building a new 110-foot by 1,200-foot lock in the existing footprint of the decommissioned Sabin Lock. This will allow for redundancy for the Poe Lock which allows the largest freighters currently plying the Great Lakes to pass through. Hear about the design of the lock and the significant use of concrete to achieve this engineering feat.

Type 1L Cement: How is it Going? (Chris Kennedy, St. Marys Cement) Now that the concrete industry has over a year of experience with Type 1L cement in Michigan, what are the early results? Have there been any concerns? Chris will discuss the basics of portland-limestone cement and how the industry is implementing this lower-carbon binder.

Designing with and Using Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Rebar (Matt Kero, GatorBar) Did you know that the American Concrete Institute (ACI) recently published a new standard (ACI 440) on designing with FRP rebar? Matt will discuss the benefits of these materials and how to design concrete structures using these products. Come see why FRP rebar is preferred over standard epoxy-coated steel in many situations.
